Powder Room Project // Custom Tile

My passion for materials informs almost every aspect of my work. So, when my friend (and uber-talented industrial designer) Martha Beckman announced that she was collaborating with Terra Domus to create custom tile I audibly gasped with excitement. Terra Domus is a Milwaukee-based handmade tile company with major clout. So I knew Martha’s contribution with them would likely result in something just perfect for my client’s powder room.

Before I tell you about the custom tile, let me back up and give you some context. The powder room in question belongs to a client and it doubles as a guest bathroom. I’ll go into more detail about the project in the next few weeks but for now, I want to give you a general idea of the space. It’s not a huge bathroom but it is comfortable and roomy enough to have a tub.  The room is an interior one with zero windows, so it is in dire need of a “wow factor.”  The plan is to keep the existing plumbing in place but give the tile and other fixtures a style overhaul. At the heart of the transformation is a bold custom tile that spans floor to ceiling and wraps around the 3 walls of the tub.

Based on previous discussions with my client I knew she wanted a moody black powder room.  After combing through a lot of inspiration I hit on something. I have always loved floral prints on black backgrounds. Colors and shapes really pop on a dark background.  You can see how this translated into the painterly abstracted, floral-inspired pattern that Martha created.

With my request in mind and after some experimenting, Martha came up with the perfect pattern. I love that the colors and repetition reference a floral print but the painterly execution keeps it from feeling the slightest bit…”grandma.” This powder room is going to be a true work of art.

Hand Made Custome Tile

The label “hand made” is tossed around a lot but Terra Domus tiles are the real deal. Each and every tile for this project is cut out by hand in the Terra Domus studio and every single piece will be glazed by a real human person. The fact that these tiles are made by hand gives them a slight irregularity that only enhances their beauty. I can not wait to get these bad boys on the wall and I will definitely show you the completed project soon!

Thank You, Terra Domus and Martha Beckman Ceramics for rocking this tile project!
